A touring park with a bistro on it, near the top of the NC500
North Coast Touring Park sits at Melvich, on the stretch of the North Coast 500 between Bettyhill and Thurso, which is a part of the route where places to stop thin out. It takes motorhomes, campervans, caravans, rooftop tents and ordinary tents, and it also has heated pods for anyone travelling the route without a vehicle to sleep in.
The thing that sets it apart on this coast is that The Halladale Inn is on the same site. It is a licensed café, bistro and bar in a crofting house dating from 1882, so after a long day driving you can eat, have a drink and walk back to the pitch. There is a shop too, selling the things you run out of. Melvich Beach is a fifteen to twenty minute walk away.
Good to know
- The park is seasonal, normally opening 1 March and closing 30 November. Confirm the dates when you book.
- Bedding is not supplied in the pods. Bring your own.
- The Halladale Inn gets busy in summer and advises booking a table ahead.
- Dogs must be kept on a lead on the park and exercised off it. A dog staying in a pod has to be declared at booking.
- Opening dates, check-in windows and restaurant hours change from year to year, so check before you set off.

Rooftop tents pitch on the hardstanding. The seven-berth pods are worth knowing about if you are travelling as a group of friends or a larger family, because affordable accommodation for seven in northern Sutherland is scarce, and everything else tends to mean two bookings.

Where it puts you
Melvich Beach is the obvious walk, fifteen to twenty minutes down to the sand, dunes and the mouth of the River Halladale. Portskerra harbour is about forty minutes on foot. Thurso, twenty miles east, has the supermarkets, the rail connection and the ferry from Scrabster to Orkney.
Everything else on this stretch is a short drive: Strathy Point, the Strathnaver valley, Torrisdale Bay and the peatland boardwalk at Forsinard. The NC500 route page covers the northern section properly, and Melvich makes a sensible base for two or three nights rather than one, which is how most people underplay this coast.
