Three cabins, seventy metres apart
Mount Freedom is a small woodland site above the Firth of Clyde, on farmland the same family has looked after for sixty years. Angus and Tracy designed the cabins and built Brae first. The three stand roughly 70 metres apart with the parking tucked between them, so the most you see of anyone else is two other roofs through the trees.
Each cabin is the same idea carried out three times. A king size bed sits on a mezzanine loft, with a leather sofa, a wood burner, a kitchen with an oven and a fridge freezer, and a shower room below it. Outside, a long veranda covers an outdoor bath, and an open fireplace with Adirondack chairs stands clear of it. The owners supply the firewood and kindling for both fires.
What separates them is where each stands and what it looks at. All face west towards Arran, Ailsa Craig and the Mull of Kintyre, from different points along the wood's edge.

Good to know
- Two people per cabin, strictly. There is no third bed.
- The bed is up a steep wooden ladder. There is a photo of it on the owners' homepage.
- No WiFi and no TV. Each cabin has a portable DVD player and a shelf of DVDs instead.
- Check in is from 4pm and check out is by 10am.
- Up to two dogs at £20 each per stay. They cannot go on the furniture or the mezzanine, or be left in the cabin alone.
- One car per cabin, in the designated space, at 5mph on site.
- No smoking, and no candles or other open flames, because the cabins are wooden and stand against the forest.
- The 25% deposit is never refunded, and the balance falls due ten weeks before arrival.

Location
Where it puts you
The estate runs from the shore up to the Carrick Hills in Ayrshire, on the ground between the two Kennedy castles. Culzean Castle is the grand one, down the coast on its cliff, and the ruin at Dunure is the other. The Ayrshire Coastal Path winds through the estate itself, so the walking starts at the door, and part of the ground is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Dunure village and its harbour are walkable, and the owners put the beaches and caves along this shore within reach on foot too. Ayr is roughly six miles north up the A719, with the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum at Alloway on the way in.

Frequently asked questions
How many cabins are there, and are they all the same?
Three: Baron, Bennan and Brae, built to the same plan, so what changes is where they stand and what they face. The owners also let Aucheninch Cottage, a restored stone farm cottage on the estate.
Which cabin is nearest the car?
Brae. Bennan is a short walk in, and Baron is furthest out, on the wood's edge.
Is there a hot tub?
No. Each cabin has an outdoor bath set under its veranda, which the owners call a bath, not a hot tub.
What is already in the cabin when we arrive?
Bed linen and towels, bathroom toiletries and gowns, and the firewood for both fires. Keys are left in the cabin door.
Can we cook outside?
Yes. The owners set up a Weber kettle BBQ with charcoal and tools for £10, payable on arrival rather than booked ahead, and clean it afterwards.
Is there anything to do on the estate itself?
There is a tennis court, and the owners lend rackets and balls. Trainers must be worn on it.
