Luxury self-catering near Dunvegan with a hot tub, sauna and Cuillin views
Set in the crofting township of Roag on Skye’s north-west coast, Captain’s Rest is a spacious self-catering cottage designed for four. The setting is quiet and rural, but Dunvegan is close enough for restaurants, shops and days at Dunvegan Castle, while some of western Skye’s best-known landscapes are within easy reach.
The views are a big part of staying here. Large windows and sliding doors look across Loch Bracadale towards the Cuillin, while on clear days the outlook reaches as far as Rum and Canna. MacLeod’s Tables rise to the side of the property, giving the cottage a strong sense of its west Skye location.
Inside, underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove make it equally appealing outside summer. The real bonus comes after a day exploring: Captain’s Rest has its own authentic Finnish sauna and an outdoor hot tub, giving guests somewhere to slow down while still making the most of the surrounding landscape.

Where it puts you
Captain’s Rest puts you on the quieter western side of Skye, within reach of some of the island’s most dramatic coastal scenery.
Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is one of the obvious nearby days out. The ancestral home of Clan MacLeod has been continuously occupied by the same family for around 800 years, with gardens overlooking Loch Dunvegan and seasonal boat trips to see the local seal colony.
Head north from Dunvegan and you reach Coral Beach at Claigan. The walk from the road end is around 4km / 2.5 miles return, following tracks and grassy croft land before reaching the distinctive pale shoreline and views across Loch Dunvegan.
West of Captain’s Rest lies Neist Point, one of Skye's most recognisable coastal locations. The lighthouse stands at the island's most westerly point, reached by a steep path and steps through dramatic cliff scenery. The return walk is around 3km / 1.75 miles and takes roughly one to two hours.
The lighthouse itself was first lit in 1909 and remains an operational Northern Lighthouse Board station, although the tower is not open to visitors.
For a much bigger walking day, MacLeod’s Tables dominate the skyline around Dunvegan and Roag. The two distinctive flat-topped hills provide a considerably more demanding outing across rough and often boggy terrain, so this is one for experienced walkers with appropriate equipment and navigation skills.
Further afield, Portree, the Fairy Pools, Talisker, the Cuillin and the Trotternish Peninsula can all be incorporated into longer days exploring the island.
Northern lights on the Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye is one of the best places in Scotland to see the northern lights. The island sits at around 57 degrees north - far enough up the country to fall within the auroral zone on nights of strong geomagnetic activity.
