The one out in the fields

Peregrine is the Wildflower lodge that is not beside water. It sits out in grassland with floor-to-ceiling windows on the fields, which means the view is sky, grass and whatever walks across it: deer come through, and the birdsong in early summer is the loudest thing you will hear all week.

Inside it is one open space with a king bed, a wood-burning stove with the firewood included, a kitchen with a hob, oven, fridge freezer, kettle and toaster, and an en-suite with an electric shower and a heated towel rail. There is a smart TV, wifi and a workspace, and a travel cot can be provided, which the other two lodges do not offer.

Of the three, this is the one for anyone who would rather look at open country than at water, and the only one set up for a baby.

All three sleep two in a king bed, take dogs, have an en-suite with a heated towel rail, wifi, a smart TV and towels and linen provided, and all three are £85 a night at the time of writing.

Where it puts you

Lonmay is inland from the Buchan coast, which is one of the least visited stretches of Scotland and better than that suggests. Fraserburgh Beach and the dunes at Philorth are ten minutes, and the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses is built around Kinnaird Head lighthouse in the town.

A few minutes away, the Loch of Strathbeg is one of the largest dune lochs in Britain and a major bird reserve. Troup Head and the Bullers of Buchan have the seabird cliffs, and the ruins at Pitsligo and the Bronze Age cairn at Memsie are both close. The Formartine and Buchan Way runs south on an old railway line for walking and cycling, and Aberdeenshire covers the rest.
