Six pods on a croft, a field back from the A9

Evelix sits on croft land outside Dornoch, close enough to the A9 that you are not driving single track to get in, and far enough off it that the view is open ground and hills rather than traffic. There are six pods. All of them are heated with electric underfloor heating rather than being run as a summer site, and every one has its own shower room, kitchen, and dining area inside, so there is no walk across wet grass to a facilities block at seven in the morning.

Each pod has private decking, its own parking space, a TV, wifi, and desk furniture if you need to work for an hour. Bedding, towels, and crockery are supplied, and there is a welcome pack when you arrive. The kitchens are compact: a microwave, a small fridge, a kettle, and a toaster, which is enough for breakfast and for reheating what you brought back, and not enough for a full dinner.

The sixth pod is the reason this site is worth singling out on a coast where almost nothing is step free.

Dornoch is five minutes down the road and carries more than a town this size usually does. There is a cathedral founded in the 13th century, and there is Royal Dornoch, the championship links that draws most of the town's summer visitors and that we cover in the golf stays guide. The beach is about five minutes away by car, and the sand is among the easiest to walk onto of any on this coast.

The A9 outside is the east coast leg of the NC500, which runs north from Inverness through Tain and Dornoch towards Golspie and Brora, then out into the long empty stretch to Caithness. It is the section most people drive in a morning, and staying on it is the whole argument for stopping.
