Pods built for the weather, not the summer

The pods at West Clyne sit on farmland above Brora, and they are built to be used in February as readily as July: fully insulated, underfloor heating throughout, and a proper en-suite with an electric shower rather than a walk across a field. Each one has a double bed with hotel linen, a sofa that folds out to a second double, and a kitchen with an oven, hob, fridge freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster, so you are not tied to eating out on a stretch of coast where the kitchens stop serving early.

Towels and bedding are included. So is the tech, which is more considered than glamping usually is: wifi, a smart TV, Bluetooth sound, and Philips Hue lighting you can set from the bed.

The two things that make this site rather than the pods are the outdoor sauna, which guests use free of charge, and the hot tubs at some of the pods. Neither is on every pod, so it is worth being specific when you book.

Brora or Achmelvich

The same owners run a second site on the west coast at Achmelvich, and the two are a genuinely different stay rather than two of the same thing.

Check in is from 3pm. Check out is 10am.
Three nights minimum from April to September, and four over Christmas and New Year. Shorter stays only when a gap allows it.
Dog friendly and dog free pods are separate, so say which you want at booking rather than on arrival.
No cots are provided, so bring a travel cot if you need one.
The pods are not wheelchair accessible.
Towels are for use in the pod. Bring your own for the beach.
Every pod is named after a hill you can see. Which one you have is in the confirmation email, along with the key safe code.

Where it puts you

Brora is on the quieter side of the NC500, the east coast leg that most people drive through on day one and regret not stopping on. The village has a long sandy beach, a championship links course, and Clynelish distillery on its edge. Dunrobin Castle is a few miles south at Golspie, all turrets and formal gardens above the sea, and it flies falcons daily in season.

North of here the road empties out towards Helmsdale, Wick and John o' Groats, so this is a sensible last night of comfort before the top of the country, or a first one after it.
