A whole house, and a team who stay out of the way

Hillhouse is not a hotel, and not quite a self-catering let either. The house goes to one group at a time, ten bedrooms and six reception rooms of it, with a housekeeping team working around you for the length of the stay. That is what the place is for: twenty people under one roof, without queueing for a bathroom.

The bedrooms are individually done and each carries White Company linen, luxury soaps, a television, and wifi. Nine bathrooms serve the ten rooms, several with baths set into marble. Downstairs there is a drawing room, a library, a dining room, a grand sitting room, and a games room built around a snooker table, so twenty people can be in four places at once and still eat together.

Food is arranged rather than provided. The owners keep a list of Scottish chefs and caterers who will cook at the house or deliver a supper ready to heat, and you can bring your own cook, use the guest kitchen, or drive the ten minutes into Troon. There is also a treatment room, where a therapist offers deep tissue, Swedish, and hot stone massage by arrangement.

Good to know

  • The house is let exclusively, so a booking takes the whole place rather than a room in it.
  • Check in is from 4pm. The booking listing gives check out at 11am and the booking conditions give 10am, so confirm which applies to your dates.
  • No meals are included. Cook in the guest kitchen, book a chef from the owners' list, or eat out.
  • The booking listing says pets are allowed, while the booking conditions say they need prior consent and carry an extra charge. Ask before you bring a dog.
  • Smoking indoors is not allowed.
  • A card pre-authorisation of £1,500 is held against damage, and released five days after departure.
  • A deposit of at least 50 per cent confirms a booking, with the balance due 60 days before arrival. Cancelling inside 60 days forfeits the full cost.

Location

Where it puts you

The house sits two miles inland from Troon, which puts it in the middle of the densest stretch of links golf in Ayrshire. The owners give Dundonald Links at two miles, Royal Troon and Western Gailes at three, Prestwick at six, and Turnberry at 25, so a group can play a different Open venue each day and be back for dinner.

Away from the golf, the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is about half an hour down the coast and Culzean Castle a 40 minute drive. Troon Marina runs the ferry to Arran and will charter you a boat. The owners put Glasgow at 40 minutes and Edinburgh at about an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Can Hillhouse host a wedding?

Yes. The house holds up to 36 guests for a ceremony, with 20 staying overnight. You can marry in the house, choose a spot in the grounds, or take your vows at a local church or on the beach.

Is catering available?

Not in house. The owners work with a list of Scottish chefs and catering businesses who will cook at the house or deliver food ready to heat, and they will pass the details on. Bringing your own chef is also fine.

What is there to do without leaving the grounds?

A snooker table in the games room, a library, a walled garden to read in, croquet on the lawn, and a barbecue area. The treatment room offers massage by arrangement.

Will the owners organise activities?

Yes. Cookery demonstrations, whisky and wine tastings, clay shooting, falconry, archery, and art classes can be booked, along with transport and boat or yacht charter from Troon Marina.

How far is the nearest town?

Troon is two miles away, a ten minute drive by the owners' reckoning, and they keep a list of places to eat there.
