Three huts for two, on the River Ayr
Lintmill sits on the edge of Sorn, off the Catrine Road, with the River Ayr Way running past. The three huts stand apart from each other, each with its own terrace and its own wood-fired hot tub, so nobody is sharing a deck or waiting for a tub.
This is adults only and the operator is blunt about it. Each hut takes two adults, children are not permitted, and group bookings are turned down. What that buys is quiet, which is what the reviews keep coming back to.
Inside, the fit is warmer than a hut usually is: a king bed made up, an en-suite shower room with toiletries and towels, underfloor heating, and wifi. The kitchen end has a hob, a microwave, and a fridge with a freezer compartment, so breakfast and a simple dinner are easy and a roast is not.
“We've stayed in lots of Shepherd Huts but this was definitely one of the nicest. All the amenities are provided, including toiletries. Underfloor heating keeps it cosy and warm and the hot tubs are a wonderful addition.
These huts are set in a quiet and secluded location, where it feels like you're totally on your own.

Good to know
- Check in is from 4pm, and the owners text on the day if the hut is ready sooner. Check out is 11am.
- Two nights is the minimum. Single nights come up on the booking calendar now and then.
- The tub is wood fired, so it wants lighting well before you want to sit in it. It arrives filled and clean, with tools, firelighters, kindling and logs.
- Pre-lighting the tub for your arrival is a paid extra, added at the time of booking.
- Dogs go in the Thistle, up to two, and a supplement applies. The other huts are kept pet free.
- Parking is on site, at reception rather than at the hut door.
- The nearest shop is in Catrine, and there is a Tesco at Auchinleck.

Where it puts you
Sorn is inland East Ayrshire, farm country rather than coast, and the River Ayr Way is the walk that starts nearest the door. The owners point guests at Dumfries House and its estate, the Blackstone Clydesdales, and the Barony Colliery winding tower at Auchinleck.
For the wider county, the Ayrshire page covers the coast and the Burns country south of Ayr, which the owners put at 15 miles and half an hour. Glasgow is 33 miles and 50 minutes north by their reckoning, which makes this a workable base for a city trip as well as a place to hide.

Frequently asked questions
Can we bring children?
No. All three huts are adults only, and children are not permitted in any of them.
Which hut takes dogs?
The Thistle, and only the Thistle. Up to two dogs, for a supplement. Choose that hut when you book.
Do we have to light the hot tub ourselves?
Yes, unless you pay to have it pre-lit. It is filled and cleaned before you arrive, and comes with everything you need to light it plus a guide to using it safely.
Is there a minimum stay?
Two nights. Single nights occasionally appear on the booking calendar, so it is worth looking rather than assuming.
What is the kitchen like?
A hob, a microwave, and a fridge with a freezer compartment, set up for cooking simply rather than for a big meal.
Can you get here by train?
Auchinleck is the nearest station, 3.4 miles away, and the nearest bus stop is on Sorn Street in Catrine.
