The one where the garden ends at the loch

Church Cottage is the waterfront property of the three that Loch Ness Escapes run around Lochend, and it is the only one where Loch Ness is at the end of the lawn rather than a few minutes away. There is a small beach you reach from the garden, boats pass, and the view runs the length of the water towards Drumnadrochit.

Inside it is two bedrooms and two bathrooms for four, renovated to a standard that suits the price, with a sitting room built around the stove and a kitchen set up for cooking properly rather than reheating. The hot tub is wood-fired, under a pagoda strung with lights, angled at the loch.

The trade is between that setting and the fact that ten minutes gets you into Inverness. Lochend is far enough out to be quiet and close enough that you can eat in town and be back before the fire goes out.

Lochend sits at the north end of Loch Ness, which is the end most people drive past on their way somewhere else. St Columba is supposed to have had his encounter with something in the water here, which is as good a claim as any on this loch.

Boat trips leave from Dochgarroch Locks a few minutes away, and the Caledonian Canal towpath makes an easy flat walk or ride. Urquhart Castle is about half an hour down the west shore, Culloden twenty minutes east, and the Great Glen Way passes close by.
