The six lodges that take a family

These are the larger lodges at Pine Bank, the ones with two or three bedrooms and, in most cases, a second bathroom, which is the thing that decides whether six people in a lodge is a holiday or a rota.

Four of the six are luxury grade, so a private sauna is the norm here rather than the exception it is among the smaller lodges. All of them have a wood burning stove, a full kitchen and their own parking, and all six take dogs.

Cedar and Spey are the two that sleep six, and they do it differently: Spey has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, while Cedar has two bedrooms and puts the fifth and sixth guests in a second living space, which suits a family with younger children better than it suits three couples.

The site sits at Dalfaber on the quiet edge of Aviemore, with the Speyside Way past the door and the village about fifteen minutes' walk along the river. The railway station is the same distance, which matters more here than in most of the Highlands: the sleeper from London stops in Aviemore.

Cairngorm Mountain is up the ski road at Glenmore for the snow, the funicular and the plateau walks. Loch Morlich has the beach and the watersports, Rothiemurchus and Loch an Eilein have the pine forest walks, and Landmark at Carrbridge and the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig deal with the days when the mountain is in cloud.
