A mission hall with the beds already made
The building was a mission hall before it was anywhere to stay, and the conversion kept it on one level with the shape of the original. The lounge has a sofa, an armchair, a Smart TV, and a shelf of board games, maps, and books. The kitchen diner runs to an electric cooker, a microwave, a washing machine, a toaster, and a kettle, with an extendable table and seating for four. There is no dishwasher and no tumble dryer, so the indoor drying rack and the whirligig in the garden are what you have.
Heating matters in a stone building this far north, and the owners run theirs on timers so the cottage is warm whether or not you find the controls. They describe it as well insulated and comfortable in stormy weather, with instructions left in the kitchen. There is no stove or open fire.
What arrives with the booking is more than most. Beds are made up, towels are out, there is a hairdryer in each bedroom, and the kitchen is stocked down to the cooking oil, the herbs, and the balsamic vinegar. The cottage has held four AA stars for 2025 and 2026.
Good to know
- The short term let licence allows four guests and no more. Extra guests can end the stay without a refund.
- No pets, because of allergies in the family. Assistance dogs are welcome with notice so the cleaning can be adjusted.
- Three nights is the shortest summer stay, sometimes less in winter or to fill a gap between bookings.
- Check out is by 10.30am. Early arrival, late departure, and bag drop depend on other bookings.
- No electric vehicle charging. The nearest charger is 2.5 miles away at Galson Campsite.
- Not fully wheelchair accessible, though there are no steps inside. The decking is up two steps from the garden.
- Parking is gravel, with room for three or four cars, and the bike store is padlocked and holds four.

Where it puts you
Borve is on the west side of Lewis, and the owners describe the village as being on the Hebridean Way. A small shop is five minutes on foot, and so is Borve House Hotel and Restaurant, where booking is essential and Sunday opening is occasional. Stornoway is about seventeen miles, roughly thirty minutes by car. Sunday is quiet across the island: most shops and attractions close, the Tesco in Stornoway opens from noon until 8pm, Engebrets garage from 10am until 4pm, and no buses run at all.
Getting here takes planning. CalMac sails from Ullapool, a stop on the North Coast 500, and from Uig on Skye to Tarbert on Harris. Loganair flies into Stornoway from Inverness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Book every leg, and any car hire, well ahead. A car is the easy answer once you are here, but the cottage sits on the W1 bus route, which makes arriving without one workable.
