Four pods on a working farm

Gavin and Anna Brown took Springfield on in 2010, and the four pods sit on the farm rather than beside it. What goes on around you is lambing, calving, and tractor work in the fields. A signed farm walk runs through the fields, fenced off from the grazing animals, and there is a bridle path round the farm.

All four pods are built to the same plan, so the only choice at booking is whether you need one of the two that take a dog. Each sleeps up to six: a main bedroom with a king bed, a second bedroom with two small single beds, and a sofa in the living area that folds out to a double. The bathroom is a separate room, with a shower, a sink and a WC.

The living, kitchen and dining space is open plan, and the pods are insulated, double glazed and warmed by an infrared heating system. Outside each one there is a private hot tub, a BBQ with the gas supplied, and a seating area looking at the Pentland Hills.

Good to know

  • Check in is self service from 4pm using a PIN code, and check out is by 10am.
  • The kitchen has a fridge freezer, a cooker with a hob, and a microwave, with utensils, pots, plates and glassware.
  • Beds are made up and towels provided, with a welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar, milk and seasoning.
  • Parking is private, up to two cars per pod. Electric car charging is on site at additional cost.
  • Meat from the farm is sold for the BBQ, in breakfast, beef, pork and lamb packs.
  • A 40% deposit falls due within 24 hours of booking and is non-refundable. Cancel inside 14 days and the whole payment goes.
  • Smoking is not allowed inside a pod or in the hot tub, and children need an adult with them in the tub.

Where it puts you

The Pentland Hills are a Regional Park, and the owners send guests to the Flotterstone visitor centre a few miles along the road. Closer in there is Penicuik Estate, Leadburn Community Woodland, and Gladhouse Reservoir for wild swimming.

Edinburgh is the other half of why people book a farm at Penicuik. The one drive time the owners publish is the airport, 18 miles away and 35 minutes by car, and a bus stop at the end of the farm road runs from Galashiels through Peebles into the city centre. Turn the other way and the Scottish Borders put Peebles, the mountain biking at Glentress and Traquair House within a morning.

Frequently asked questions

How many pods are there, and do they differ?

Four, all built to the same plan. The difference that matters at booking is that two take a dog and two are kept pet free.

How do six people fit into one pod?

A king bed in the main bedroom, two small singles in the second, and a sofa in the living area that folds out to a double.

Can we bring a dog?

One well behaved dog, in one of the two pet friendly pods, at an additional charge. Ask for one when you book.

Can you get here without a car?

A bus stop at the end of the farm road is on the Galashiels to Edinburgh route through Peebles and Penicuik. Newtongrange has the nearest mainline station.

Can we see the animals?

There is a signed farm walk, fenced away from the grazing stock, that you can do in your own time. Lambing runs from January to April.
