Roman Camp Cabin

One cabin, and a workshop behind it

Roman Camp Cabin is a single room and a shower room on the edge of Broxburn, set up for two. What separates it from other cabins within reach of Edinburgh is what the owners do when they are not letting it. They service and rebuild motorbikes, they will work on yours on request, and the parking outside the door is laid out for motorcycles as well as cars, with security options provided.

The layout is open plan, the bed made up either as a super king or as two singles, whichever suits, and the sofa folds out if a third person is coming. Warmth is two wall-mounted electric heaters, with underfloor heating in the shower room, which has a sink, an electric shower, a toilet, and nothing else. Bedding and towels are supplied, along with toiletries.

The kitchen is the part to hold against your plans. There is a two-ring induction hob, a fridge, a microwave, a kettle, a toaster, and the crockery, glassware, cutlery, and cooking utensils to go with them, but no conventional oven. Coffee, tea bags, sugar, and milk are left out, and the dining table folds away. The owners point out that the West Lothian takeaways deliver here.

Broxburn sits in West Lothian between Edinburgh and the Forth, close enough to the city for a day in it and quiet at night. The cabin's own list of distances puts Edinburgh Airport and the Royal Highland Showground at five miles, Jupiter Artland at seven, the Forth Bridges at South Queensferry at eight, Linlithgow Palace at ten, and the Kelpies at nineteen.

The train is the argument for staying out here rather than in town. Uphall Station is a fifteen minute walk, and the cabin's site gives seventeen minutes from there into Edinburgh Waverley, or a little over an hour to Glasgow Queen Street. The owners also pitch the cabin as the start or the finish of a North Coast 500 run, a long way north of here but a sensible place to sleep either side of the drive.
