If you’re in Glasgow with the family and the weather’s doing what it does best (a bit grey and a lot wet), Riverside Museum is the perfect place to escape indoors. Sitting on the banks of the River Clyde, this award-winning transport museum is packed with interactive exhibits, vintage vehicles, and plenty to keep curious minds and little hands entertained.
It’s not just a museum full of things to look at — it’s a place where kids can climb aboard, explore, and imagine life in a different era. And best of all? It’s completely free.
Trains, trams and streets of the past
Riverside Museum is a hit with families because there’s something for everyone. Kids can hop on old trams, peer into vintage carriages, and even wander through a recreated cobbled street, complete with old-fashioned shops. It’s like stepping back in time — with the bonus that you don’t have to dodge horse-drawn carts.
There are over 3,000 objects on display, from bicycles and classic cars to skateboards and prams. Whether your kids are fascinated by fire engines or just enjoy exploring, there’s plenty to keep them busy. Touch screens and interactive displays make it fun and educational without feeling too much like school.
Right outside, you’ll also find the Tall Ship Glenlee, where families can climb aboard a real sailing ship — another great adventure, included with your visit.
Parking and facilities
Riverside Museum is easy to reach, just a short drive or bus ride from Glasgow city centre. There’s a large car park on-site (paid parking), but it can fill up during weekends and holidays.
Inside, you’ll find all the family-friendly essentials — a café serving lunches, snacks, and coffees, as well as plenty of picnic spots if you prefer to bring your own food. There are toilets, baby-changing facilities, and lifts, making it fully accessible for buggies and wheelchairs.
Opening times & costs
Riverside Museum is open daily, generally from 10am to 5pm (11am on Sundays). Like many of Glasgow’s museums, entry is free, including access to most of the Tall Ship. Occasionally, special exhibitions may have a small charge, but the main attraction won’t cost you a penny.
How long do you need?
Most families spend around 2 hours here, but you could easily stay longer, especially if you explore both the museum and the Tall Ship. Add a café stop, and it makes for a full afternoon out.
