Standing tall on Abbey Craig, overlooking the city and the site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge, this famous tower celebrates Scotland’s legendary warrior — William Wallace. It’s more than just a monument. With woodland walks, stunning views, and a bit of a climb to get the heart pumping, it’s a great family-friendly outdoor attraction where kids can burn off energy and everyone can soak up some history along the way.
A fun climb with big rewards
The adventure starts before you even reach the monument itself. Families can either take the free shuttle bus from the visitor centre or walk through the scenic Abbey Craig woodland — a gentle uphill path surrounded by trees, perfect for kids who love to explore.
Once at the base, the real challenge begins — climbing the 246 spiral steps to the top of the monument! Along the way, there are three exhibition rooms where you can catch your breath and learn about Wallace’s life, the famous battle, and even see his legendary sword. The displays are engaging and easy to follow, with interactive elements for younger visitors.
At the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views across Stirling, the River Forth, and the surrounding hills — definitely worth the effort, and a great spot for family photos.
Parking and facilities
There’s a large car park at the visitor centre (paid parking), which is also where you’ll find the ticket office, gift shop, café, and toilets. The woodland walk starts here, or you can hop on the shuttle if little legs aren’t up for the climb before the climb!
Picnic areas are available around Abbey Craig, making it a lovely spot to relax after your visit.
