Backtrack Bothies
Backtrack Bothies offers a unique and serene escape into the heart of nature, where adventure meets tranquility.
The welcoming haven of Backtrack Bothies
Tucked away in the hills near Glenfinnan, Backtrack Bothies is the kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying. Three simple wooden cabins sit quietly in the landscape, each one hand-built with recycled materials and a whole lot of imagination. It’s not a fancy escape, but it doesn’t need to be. The charm is in its simplicity.
The drive there sets the tone. Winding roads open onto views of lochs and mountains, and by the time you arrive you already feel far from everyday noise. The bothies themselves blend so naturally into the setting you almost miss them at first. Step inside though, and you’re welcomed by the warmth of wood, soft light, and little touches that make it feel personal.
The wood burner quickly became the heart of my stay. There’s something hypnotic about tending the fire; adding logs, listening to the crackle, and watching the glow spread through the room. Evenings by the stove, book in hand and tea close by, felt like a reminder of how good the simple things are.
And then there’s the hot tub. It’s shared between the cabins, but both times I stayed I had it to myself. Heated the eco-friendly way, it sits tucked in a corner where you can sink into warm water and look straight up at the stars. No spa music, no neon lights - just the quiet night air and the sound of the countryside.
What really stuck with me, though, were the small details. Coffee sacks turned into blinds. Reclaimed wood shaped into beams and furniture. Everything inside has a story, and together it makes the place feel alive. It’s resourceful and creative without ever feeling preachy about sustainability.
Days slipped into an easy rhythm - walking the nearby trails, spotting wildlife, sitting outside with a mug of something hot. Afternoons disappeared in scribbled notes and slow conversations, and when the sun went down the sky lit up in streaks of pink before fading into a scatter of stars.
Leaving was the hardest part. Backtrack Bothies isn’t just somewhere to stay near Glenfinnan. It’s an experience that nudges you towards a slower, more thoughtful way of living. You go for the scenery, the fire, the hot tub under the stars. You leave with a head full of ideas about how life can be simpler, and maybe better, when we stop chasing more and start enjoying what we have.
