ROAD TO THE ISLES

Cairn Lodges

1 / 6

Six lodges, one hillside, a hot tub each

The six lodges are not graded. Every one has a log burning stove, a fitted kitchen with a dishwasher, and a log fired hot tub of its own outside, so the choice comes down to how many beds you need and how high up the hill you want to be. Four of the six are set high enough for uninterrupted sea views towards Eigg, Rum, and the Cuillin on Skye.

The kitchens run to an oven and grill, an induction hob, a microwave, a dishwasher, and a Nespresso machine, and four of the six add underfloor heating.

Pine View is the outlier. It has five bedrooms, three sun decks, a utility room with a washing machine, and a cold plunge dip tank alongside the hot tub.

Good to know

  • Check out is before 10am, earlier than most self catering. Check in is from 4pm, and the owners want notice of arrivals after 7pm.
  • The stove and the hot tub both burn wood, and only one bundle of logs and kindling comes with the lodge, so plan for more on a longer stay.
  • Two dogs is the limit in any lodge, and dogs go on leads when you walk in the area.
  • Two parking spaces to a lodge, so a group filling Pine View needs a plan for the third car.
  • Nightly rates are not published. Booking is direct, with 25% down to hold the dates and the balance eight weeks before arrival.
  • Muck and Raasay are offered year round as three or four night short breaks.
  • Smoking is not allowed inside the lodges. It is allowed outside on the site.

Location

Where it puts you

The site is on the Road to the Isles between Arisaig and Mallaig, among the Silver Sands of Morar. Arisaig marina runs cruises out to the Small Isles, and Mallaig is the CalMac port for Armadale on Skye as well as for Canna, Rum, Muck, and Eigg.

The road east runs through Glenfinnan to Fort William. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a short drive from the lodges, and the Jacobite Steam Train crosses its 21 arches each day in season.

The steam train featured in Harry Potter is going through Glenfinnan.

Frequently asked questions

How many lodges are there, and what sizes?

Six. Pine View has five bedrooms, Skye and Rum have three each, Eigg has two, Muck has one, and Raasay is a studio.

How do the hot tubs work?

They are log fired rather than electric, and the tub is included in the price. The owners email a safety sheet before you arrive and may refresh the water on a longer stay.

Is there a washing machine?

Pine View has a utility room with one, and Eigg lists one. The other four lodges do not list one.

What is in the welcome pack?

Bed linen, towels, Highland Soap toiletries, tea, coffee, milk, dishwasher tablets, cleaning supplies, and one bundle of logs and kindling.

Do all the lodges have a wood burner?

Yes. Pine View, Skye, Rum, and Eigg list underfloor heating as well, and Raasay has electric heating alongside its stove.

Can we book more than one lodge?

Yes. The owners handle group bookings direct and offer a discount, so ask them rather than booking each lodge separately.
