Pods for two on the Berwickshire coast

Braeview sits in the fields above Coldingham, a mile or so back from one of the best beaches on the east coast, and it is built for couples rather than families: six pods, two people in each, and no pets on the site at any time of year.

Each pod has a proper bed, an en-suite shower room with toiletries, and a kitchen that lets you cook rather than reheat. Outside there is decking and a firepit of your own, which is the thing people remember, given how dark it gets out here and how few other lights there are.

The hot tubs are the part worth being precise about. Two of the six pods, Holly and Juniper, have their own hot tub on the deck. The other four do not, so if that is the reason you are booking, book by pod name.

There is milk in the fridge when you arrive, eggs from the farm to buy on site, and afternoon tea if you order it in advance.

Coldingham Bay is the nearest beach, a sandy crescent with a row of painted huts, a lifeguard in summer and a surf school that runs most of the year. It is the sort of beach that makes people reconsider the Borders entirely.

A mile north, St Abbs Head is a national nature reserve on volcanic cliffs, loud with guillemots and kittiwakes from spring, and the walk out to the lighthouse from the village is one of the best short coastal walks in Scotland. St Abbs harbour itself had a brief spell as New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame and has been quietly busier ever since. The Berwickshire Coastal Path runs the whole way through, from Berwick to Cockburnspath, and the section past the Head is the one to do if you only do one.
