Five cabins, and a hot tub outside every door

Belstruther is a small site above Grantshouse, in the part of Berwickshire where the hills start and the coast road is behind you. The family who run it built it themselves, and the scale has stayed honest: five cabins, set apart, rather than a field of forty.

The cabins come in two types. A Standard Double sleeps two in one open room, with the bed and the seating sharing the space. A Deluxe Double sleeps up to four, with the living room separate from the bedroom and a sofa that converts for the two extra. Both have their own hot tub outside, lit and fenced, so you are not soaking in view of the next cabin, and both come with bathrobes and slippers for the walk out to it.

Grantshouse sits inland in the Berwickshire hills, with Duns as the postal town and the nearest place of any size in the Scottish Borders. The days out pull two ways from it.

East is the coast. Eyemouth harbour has a rib operator running trips along the shore, and St Abbs, the fishing village that stood in for New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame, is further round. Above it, St Abbs Head is a national nature reserve on volcanic cliffs, loud with seabirds from spring. Belstruther puts St Abbs at about an hour from Edinburgh.

North the road runs into East Lothian, and the owners point guests at Tantallon Castle outside North Berwick and the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune. Bisley at Braidwood, a shooting ground south of Edinburgh, is the one Belstruther will book for you, at a discount, if you ask.
