Six huts, and the view is the decision

Rock & Castle sit on a working farm at Auldhame, on the stretch of East Lothian coast between North Berwick and Tantallon Castle, and the huts themselves are the unusual part: Estonian igluhuts, curved timber shells with a wall of glass at one end, laid out for two adults with a kitchenette, a shower room and a deck.

Six of them, and they are not interchangeable. Three are turned towards the sea, with extra-large windows framing Bass Rock a mile offshore and the red curtain wall of Tantallon on the cliff. Three face the other way, inland to the Lammermuir Hills, which is the quieter and darker aspect and the better one if you are here to sleep rather than to watch gannets.

It is adults only throughout, which is the point rather than an omission: this is a couples' site, on a farm, with the beach at Seacliff walkable and nothing else nearby to make a noise.

Tantallon Castle is the next field but one, a fourteenth century curtain wall on the cliff edge facing the Bass, and it is worth walking to rather than driving. Seacliff beach is the other direction, with the view of the Rock that most people never see because they stop at North Berwick.

North Berwick itself is a few minutes west for the harbour, the Scottish Seabird Centre, the two beaches and the trains, and boat trips out to the Bass and the Isle of May sail from the harbour in season. East Lothian is also the densest golf county in Scotland, with North Berwick West Links, Muirfield, Gullane and Archerfield all inside twenty minutes, and Edinburgh is about forty by car.
