Corylus Retreat

1 / 12

Two apartments, and which one depends on when you are in

Corylus is a single building above Ullapool holding two apartments, and the interesting decision is not the size but the aspect.

Fjell is the one bedroom apartment, turned south and east along Loch Broom. It gets the early light, which matters if you are up before the hill or watching the fishing boats come in.

Fjord has two bedrooms and looks south and west across to Ullapool itself, so it gets the evening sun and the lights of the village after dark.

Taken together they sleep six with two front doors, which is a good arrangement for two couples with children, or for a family who like each other but not at breakfast. Both are finished to the same standard, with full kitchens, a utility room and outdoor seating.

Good to know

  • The two apartments can be booked individually or together for exclusive use of the building.
  • Six is the total across both. Fjell alone suits two, Fjord up to four.
  • Ullapool is the last town of any size before the far north west, so it is the place to shop, refuel and eat.
  • The Stornoway ferry sails from Ullapool, which makes this a sensible night before or after the Outer Hebrides.
  • Ullapool books out in July and August, and the NC500 traffic peaks then too.
  • There is parking on site, which is not a given in Ullapool in summer.

Location

Where it puts you

Ullapool is the hinge of the west coast section of the NC500: a working fishing port with a ferry to Stornoway, a good bookshop, several places worth eating in, and mountains in every direction out of it.

North is Assynt, with Stac Pollaidh half an hour up the road and Suilven behind it, and the beaches at Achmelvich and Clachtoll beyond that. South and east are the Corrieshalloch Gorge, the Falls of Measach and the road to Inverness through Garve. The route map sets out where this sits on the loop.
