A house on the shore of Loch Lochy

Skye Fall stands on the water at Letterfinlay, and the loch is the reason the building is arranged the way it is. The open plan sitting room and kitchen are upstairs, at the level of the view, behind a window that runs the width of the room. Below them the garden ends in steps down to a private beach and a jetty. The boats going past are on the Caledonian Canal, and the local marina hires them out.

It sleeps six in three double bedrooms, and every one has its own bathroom, a loch view, and french windows onto the terrace or the decking. Two of the three are larger suites with seating areas and their own televisions, and one of those has a wood burning stove. A second stove is in the sitting room.

The oak kitchen holds a coffee machine, a dishwasher, a full size fridge freezer, and a microwave, with a washing machine as well. Linen, towels, and heating are in the price, though logs for the two stoves have to be bought locally. The house is open all year.

Good to know

Logs are not supplied. Buy them locally if you want the stoves going the first night.
Domestic electric vehicle chargers, the trickle or granny type, are forbidden at the property.
Smoking is not allowed, and the maximum occupancy must not be exceeded.
A security deposit is taken and returned within seven days of the stay, less anything damaged.
The balance is due eight weeks before arrival, and in full at the time of booking if you book inside eight weeks.
The owners do not publish check in and check out times, a minimum stay, or a pets policy for this house, so ask when you enquire.

Location

Where it puts you

Letterfinlay sits on the A82 on the north west shore of Loch Lochy, which is one of the lochs the Caledonian Canal strings together. The owners put the nearest village, Spean Bridge, at ten minutes by car, and it has a convenience store and a restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide. Closer than that, a hotel serving food is 200 yards from the house. The Commando Memorial is a short distance away on the same road, and Gairlochy, which the owners give as three miles off, is where walkers join the Great Glen Way.

Fort William is twenty minutes south by the owners' reckoning, for the shops and the West Highland Museum. The Nevis Range gondola up Aonach Mor is fifteen minutes. Going the other way the road runs beside Loch Ness to Inverness, which the owners give as an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a private beach and jetty?

Yes. Steps at the end of the garden go down to both, and the owners say the local marina hires boats for the Caledonian Canal.

Can you work from the house?

Not reliably. The owners say the connection handles email and web browsing but is not suitable for video calls, gaming, or downloading films. Mobile reception is full.

Are dogs allowed?

The Skye Fall pages do not say. Mill House Cottages, who let it, say across their properties that dogs can only be accepted by prior arrangement, so ask before you book.

How far is the Nevis Range gondola?

Fifteen minutes, by the owners' reckoning.

Where can you eat nearby?

A hotel serving food is 200 yards from the house. Further off, the owners name Corriegour Lodge Hotel on the loch and The Lovat at Fort Augustus.

When is the balance due?

Eight weeks before arrival, or in full at the time of booking if you are booking inside eight weeks.
