Sweet Donside Cabins

Four cabins, and they are not the same cabin four times

Sweet Donside is a small site in upper Donside, well east of the Cairngorm ski hills and well north of Deeside, in the quiet part of the national park that most people drive through on the way to somewhere busier. Four cabins, each for two, each with a hot tub of its own on its own deck, and each done differently enough that it is worth picking rather than taking whatever is free.

The Wee Bear's Den has the four-poster. The Wee Fae Hideaway has a canopy bed and leans hard into the forest theme. The Wee Beehive and The Wee Love Nest are the two king-bed cabins, and the Love Nest is the one that takes no dog at all.

They are cabins rather than cottages, so the kitchens are kitchenettes: fine for breakfast and a simple dinner, less good if you were planning to cook properly for a week. If that matters, Sweetheart Cottage on the same ground has a full kitchen and an open fire.

Strathdon sits on the SnowRoads Scenic Route, the road over the hills between Deeside and Speyside that climbs to the highest public road in Britain at the Lecht. It is one of the best drives in Scotland and almost nobody outside the north east knows about it.

Corgarff Castle is a few miles up the glen, a white tower inside a star-shaped wall in an empty landscape, and it is one of the strangest and best sited castles in the Cairngorms. Balmoral and Braemar are over the hill on Deeside, the Lecht is fifteen minutes for skiing in winter, and Glenlivet and the Speyside distilleries are north.
