Tower O'Ess
A historic gatehouse turned romantic Highland escape. Set right on the banks of the River Tanar, Tower O’Ess offers a rare blend of old-world charm and modern comfort.
This listed building dates back to the 1870s. Once a grand gateway to the glen, it became a working gatehouse by 1918. Today, it’s a one-of-a-kind hideaway, made for two.
There’s a super-king bed, a roll-top bath, and an outdoor hot tub lit by fairy lights. Everything you need for a slow, peaceful stay.
The living room is cosy and warm, with a wood-burning stove and endless logs. There’s a large TV, Wi-Fi, books and games for lazy evenings in.
A spiral staircase takes you up to the bedroom and bathroom. You’ll find a walk-in shower, soft robes and luxury toiletries waiting for you. From there, you can step out onto the rooftop. Take in the views, listen to the river below, and watch the stars at night.
The kitchen is fully equipped and easy to cook in. It has a dishwasher and washer/dryer too. Outside, the garden has a decked area with seating and that all-important hot tub – perfect after a day in the hills.
You’re in the heart of the Glen Tanar Estate – 25,000 acres of pine forest, rolling hills and peaceful farmland. This stretch of Royal Deeside is part of the Cairngorms National Park and home to Mount Keen, the most easterly Munro in Scotland.
Walk forest trails, climb the hills, and listen to the Water of Tanar as it winds through the glen. The air smells of pine and heather. It’s quiet. It’s wild. And it’s unforgettable.
Fancy something a bit different? The estate offers salmon fishing, deer stalking, trout fishing and grouse shooting (just check availability in advance).
You can also book wildlife photography sessions – red squirrels and golden eagles are regulars here. Hides are dotted around the estate for the best chance of spotting something special.
Whatever the season, Tower O’Ess is pure Highland bliss.
