While whisky might be the star of the show for adults, many distillery tours — including this one — welcome families with older children, offering a fascinating look at local craftsmanship and history. It’s a relaxed, warm indoor option — perfect for a rainy afternoon when you want to experience something authentically Scottish without trekking through the hills.

A taste of tradition (Without the tasting for kids!)

The Loch Lomond Distillery, located in Alexandria at the southern tip of the loch, has been crafting whisky since 1966. The guided tours walk you through the process — from grain to glass — showing how whisky is made using traditional methods and modern innovation.
For families with older children (typically aged 8+), it’s a chance to see behind the scenes of a working distillery, complete with giant copper stills, casks, and the unmistakable smell of whisky production. While adults get a wee dram at the end, kids enjoy learning about the science, history, and stories behind Scotland’s national drink.
It’s educational, surprisingly engaging for those interested in how things are made, and a good indoor option when the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor exploring.

Parking and facilities

There’s free parking available at the distillery, and it’s easy to reach from Balloch or nearby villages. The visitor centre has toilets and a small gift shop where you can pick up locally produced whiskies, gifts, and souvenirs.
While there’s no café on-site, you’re just a short drive from Balloch, where there are plenty of family-friendly places to eat.

Opening times & costs

Tours run throughout the year but should be booked in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Typical prices:
