Step into Skye’s history at Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum
If you’re exploring the south of Skye and fancy a break from the usual scenic walks, Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum is a fantastic family-friendly stop. Set in a stunning coastal location on the Sleat Peninsula, this attraction offers a bit of everything — history, nature, and a chance to let the kids run free while still learning something along the way.
While the castle itself is a romantic ruin, the real gems here are the award-winning gardens and the fascinating Museum of the Isles — perfect for those days when the weather can’t decide what it’s doing.
A mix of culture, history and space to explore
The Museum of the Isles is a great place for families to discover the story of Clan Donald and the history of the Highlands and Islands. It’s well laid out, with interactive displays and plenty of stories to bring the past to life. Older children will enjoy learning about clan battles, Viking heritage, and island life, while younger kids will be drawn to the visual exhibits and artefacts.
Once you’ve explored indoors, the gardens offer a lovely contrast — 40 acres of woodland walks, ponds, and colourful plant life. There’s space for children to explore, spot wildlife, and even enjoy a game or two on the grass. The ruins of Armadale Castle provide a dramatic backdrop, perfect for a few family photos.
Parking and facilities
There’s plenty of free parking on-site, so no stress about finding a space. The estate also has a great café — The Stables — serving hot meals, cakes, and drinks, which is ideal for warming up after a wander around the grounds.
Toilets, a gift shop, and picnic areas are all available, making it an easy and convenient stop for families. Plus, it’s just a short drive from the ferry terminal at Armadale, so it’s a popular choice for those arriving from Mallaig.
