The estate's house, not its cabin

Dunsinnan lets three places to stay and they are not variations on each other. The Cabin at Fairygreen is a single glazed room for two with a freestanding bath out on the deck, and Macbeth's Bothy is a converted bothy for two with a copper bath. This is the cottage, the one that works as a house: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a woodburning stove.

It is also the only one of the three that takes children. Bookings for the cabin are adults only and the bothy can squeeze in an infant, whereas the cottage welcomes children of any age and puts in a travel cot and a high chair without charging for them. Two couples or a family of four fit here and nowhere else on the estate.

The building went up in 1872 for the man who looked after the estate's stock, and the restoration has kept the outside and rebuilt the inside. It stands in farmland with the Sidlaw hills in front of it. The kitchen has a dishwasher and a Nespresso machine, there is a washing machine and a smart TV, and towels and Arran soaps are supplied. Outside there is a patio with garden furniture and a Big Green Egg to cook on.

The cottage sits on a working farm estate of roughly a thousand acres between Kinrossie and Collace, with three heather hills you can walk from the door: King's Seat, Black Hill, and Dunsinane Hill, the one Shakespeare sent Birnam Wood to. Deer, grouse, grey partridge, and red squirrels share the ground with shorthorn cattle and blackface sheep.

The estate puts itself 20 minutes north of Perth and an hour from Edinburgh Airport, and names the Meikleour Arms as the pub worth the short drive. Dunkeld is the other town it sends people to, north on the Tay, and Packrafting Scotland is based near there. In Perth the museum holds the Stone of Destiny and Scone Palace is on the far side of town, and Deans is the booking to make if you would rather someone else cooked.
