If your family enjoys the outdoors and doesn’t mind a bit of a climb, Kinnoull Hill is one of Perth’s best spots for a mini adventure. Sitting right on the edge of the city, this wooded hill offers peaceful walking trails, wildlife spotting, and one of the most breathtaking views in central Scotland.
It’s the kind of place where kids can explore nature, dogs can run free, and parents get rewarded with that famous viewpoint overlooking the River Tay. A proper “stretch your legs and clear your head” kind of day out.

Family walks with a view

Kinnoull Hill might sound like a serious hike, but it’s very manageable for families. There are several trails to choose from, ranging from gentle woodland strolls to a steady climb up to the summit. Older kids will love the sense of adventure, weaving through the trees and looking out for deer, squirrels, and birds along the way.
The highlight is reaching Kinnoull Tower, a ruined folly perched dramatically on the cliff edge. From here, you get panoramic views across the Tay Valley — a perfect reward after the walk and a great spot for photos. Just keep younger children close near the edges, as there are steep drops beyond the safety fences.

Parking and facilities

There are a couple of options for parking, with Jubilee Car Park being the most popular starting point. It’s free and gives easy access to the main trails. From here, it’s about a 30-40 minute walk to the top, depending on pace (and how often the kids stop to investigate sticks, stones, or mysterious forest sounds).
There are no toilets or cafés on the hill itself, so it’s best to plan ahead. Perth city centre is only a short drive away for facilities, or you can pack a picnic and enjoy it at one of the many clearings along the way.

How long do you need?

A full loop to the summit and back will take around 1.5 to 2 hours at a family-friendly pace. But like any good outdoor spot, you can tailor it — a short wander through the woods, or a longer walk if everyone’s up for it.
It’s a great morning or afternoon activity, especially if you combine it with a treat in town afterwards.

A natural playground above Perth

Kinnoull Hill is the perfect outdoor escape for families who love nature and a bit of exploring. It’s close enough to the city to be convenient, but once you’re among the trees or standing at the viewpoint, it feels like you’re miles away from anywhere.
If you’re in Perth and looking for a free, active day out with the kids — and a view that’ll have everyone reaching for their phones — Kinnoull Hill is a brilliant choice. Just don’t forget your sturdy shoes… and maybe a packet of biscuits as motivation for the climb!
