One cabin, on the edge of a field
The Cabin at Fairygreen sits on a working farm of roughly a thousand acres between the villages of Kinrossie and Collace, with the Sidlaw Hills in front of it and the Strathmore Valley opening out beyond. It is one cabin rather than a site of them, so there is nothing to share and nobody on the next deck.
The build is worth knowing about, because it is why the cabin holds its heat on a Perthshire winter night. It was designed in Edinburgh and made in Inverness from Sitka spruce grown in the Highlands, pressed into cross-laminated timber panels, and the floor-to-ceiling glazing on the field side is what the whole thing is arranged around. Inside there is a king-size bed with Egyptian cotton linen, a walk-in shower, a smart TV, a Roberts radio, and a kitchenette with an oven and a mini fridge.
The deck is the reason most people book. There is a freestanding bath out there facing the hills, and a firepit with a grill for cooking or for sitting beside once it is dark. Worth knowing before you book a January stay: the estate's own terms say the outdoor baths can freeze in very cold weather, and it does not guarantee them through the winter.
Good to know
- Check in is from 4pm and check out is 10am. There is no late check out, though early check in at 2.30pm can be paid for in advance.
- No pets at all, guide dogs aside. The estate gives ground nesting birds and livestock as the reason.
- No smoking at any of the properties, and no overnight visitors.
- The outdoor bath can be out of use in a hard frost, when the pipes and taps freeze.
- It is a kitchenette rather than a full kitchen. There is an oven and a mini fridge, which suits breakfast and a simple dinner better than a week of proper cooking.
- Bookings are taken only from people over 18. Children are welcomed at the estate's other two properties rather than here.
- A 30 per cent deposit holds the booking, with the balance due eight weeks before you arrive.

Where it puts you
The estate has three heather hills on it, King's Seat, Black Hill and Dunsinane Hill, and you can walk to all of them from the cabin without getting into the car. Dunsinane is the one in Macbeth, the hill Birnam Wood was prophesied to come to, and the earthworks of an Iron Age fort are still on the summit. Deer, grouse, grey partridge and red squirrels are all on the estate, along with the shorthorn cattle and blackface sheep.
Dunsinnan puts itself at 20 minutes north of Perth and an hour from Edinburgh Airport. Perth Museum has the Stone of Destiny, Scone Palace is on the other side of the town, and Glamis Castle is out east in Angus. Dundee and its waterfront are a straightforward run down the Sidlaws, and Dunkeld and the Hermitage are north on the Tay. If you would rather drink than drive, the distilleries and gin bars in and around Perth are the easier version of a day out.

Is there a hot tub?
No. There is a freestanding bath on the deck, outdoors and open to the view, rather than a hot tub.
Can the outdoor bath be used in winter?
Usually, but not always. The estate's terms say pipes and taps can freeze in very cold spells and it cannot guarantee the baths through the winter months.
Is there a full kitchen?
It is a kitchenette, with an oven and a mini fridge. A Yeti cooler is provided as well.
Are towels and toiletries provided?
Yes. Towels and bathrobes are supplied, along with Modm and Arran soaps and toiletries.
Can children stay?
The cabin takes bookings only from people over 18. The estate welcomes children of all ages at Fairygreen Cottage and infants in cots at Macbeth's Bothy.
Can we have visitors?
Not overnight. The estate does not allow overnight visitors at any of its properties.
Can I check in early?
Yes, if you pay for it when you book. Early check in means the cabin is ready by 2.30pm rather than 4pm, and you let yourself in.
