A house for fourteen with its own piece of shore

Lochwood House sits on the water at Lochgoilhead, on a sea loch that branches off Loch Long inside the national park, and it is set up for the kind of booking most large houses handle badly: a whole group, together, for a few days, with somewhere to be outside and somewhere to be quiet.

Seven bedrooms take up to fourteen. The configurations flex, so a family of eight and a group of fourteen can both work, and there are two self-contained apartments within the house for anyone who wants their own front door. Shorter stays can take an en-suite room rather than the lot.

The part people book it for is outside. The Wild Spa is a wood-fired hot tub and a sauna at the loch edge, and an exclusive booking of three nights or more includes a session in it. There is a geodome for yoga, a fire pit at the water, a woodland dining space that seats fourteen, and private frontage onto the loch itself.

Loch Goil is the quiet arm of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, on the Cowal peninsula, and the drive in over the Rest and Be Thankful is the reason people arrive in a good mood. Argyll Forest Park is on all sides, with the Arrochar Alps across the water and the Cobbler the best known of them. Ben Lomond is an hour round the head of the loch for anyone who wants a Munro out of the trip.

Carrick Castle sits further down the west shore, a fifteenth century tower on the water that can be walked or paddled to. Inveraray and Loch Fyne are about forty minutes west, and Glasgow is around an hour and a half back east, which makes this an unusually easy escape for a group coming from the central belt.
