Five cottages in the old farm buildings

The steading at Monkstadt is the range of farm buildings that served the MacDonald house, restored by the MacQueen family since the early 1980s into five cottages around a courtyard. They are the more affordable end of the estate, below the Prestige cottages and the lodge, and the more characterful: thick walls, small windows facing the weather and large ones facing the sea.

The five are genuinely different from each other, which is unusual in a converted steading, so it is worth choosing rather than taking what is free.

Good to know

Only three of the five take dogs. McEachann's Hideout and Pretender's Escape do not.
Check in is from 4pm and check out is 10am.
Booking takes a 50% deposit, with the balance 28 days before arrival and free cancellation up to seven days before.
Flora's Secret is the only one that sleeps five, in three bedrooms including a single.
The lodge restaurant is across the courtyard, but it is small and books up, so reserve when you book the cottage rather than on the day.
Portree is about half an hour for the supermarket. Uig, for the Outer Hebrides ferry, is about fifteen minutes.

Where it puts you

Monkstadt sits on the west side of the Trotternish peninsula, which is the part of Skye that most looks like the photographs. The Quiraing is fifteen minutes north east, the Old Man of Storr further south along the same ridge, and both are better done early or late than in the middle of the day.

Below the house is Rudha Phrionnsa, the point where Flora MacDonald landed with Prince Charles Edward Stuart on 28 June 1746 after Culloden. Two of the cottages look straight at it. Fairy Glen at Uig is twenty minutes away, and Uig itself is the ferry port for Harris and North Uist.
