Shoreside at Loch Tay

Built upside down, on purpose

Shoreside puts the bedrooms underneath and the living space on top. The kitchen, the dining area, and the lounge run together across the upper floor and open onto a balcony, so the loch is in front of you while you cook and while you eat rather than only while you sleep.

There is one of it. Shoreside is not a lodge on a park or one unit of six; it is a single house at Fearnan, let whole to four adults, and the owner takes bookings through her own site rather than an agency. The wording on that site is blunt about it: book direct for the best prices.

The kitchen is fitted out for cooking properly rather than reheating, and there is a washing machine, ironing facilities, and a hairdryer with it. Warmth comes from central heating and a multi fuel wood burning stove, which the owner also calls a log fire.

Fearnan sits on the north shore of Loch Tay, on the road that runs the length of the water between Kenmore at the east end and Killin at the west. The owner names both villages, and the ground behind the house climbs into the Ben Lawers range, which is the reason walkers come to this shore rather than the other one.

The loch itself is the draw. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing all happen off this shore, and the owner points cyclists at the road round the water. The River Tay leaves the loch at Kenmore and runs east through Aberfeldy and Dunkeld to Perth, the nearest city and the obvious wet day out.
