The lodge that guards the drive
Monzie Castle sits a few miles north of Crieff, and this is the building guarding the way in. You arrive through an arched stone entrance in the gatehouse itself, built to be looked at rather than lived in.
Inside it keeps that shape. The rooms are octagonal, the windows latticed, and the two bedrooms are reached by separate staircases, one a spiral stone stair. The sitting room has armchairs round an open fire, and the dining room off the kitchen looks out at the Perthshire hills. The kitchen has an oven and hob, a dishwasher, a fridge freezer and a washing machine. Between the bedrooms is a bathroom holding an Edwardian slipper bath that came out of Monzie Castle.
Beyond the arch there is a small cottage garden, and past that the estate itself, 4,000 acres with walking trails. Drinking water comes from a spring. The estate dates the lodge to 1790, though its own listing elsewhere calls it 19th century.

Mill House also takes bed and breakfast guests as Mill House Rooms. Brae Cottage and Mill House are the two marked pet friendly, so a dog would send you to a different door.
Good to know
- Arrival is no earlier than 4pm and departure is by 10am. A late departure is charged at £30 per half hour.
- Two nights is the minimum.
- The lodge is not marked pet friendly. The estate takes dogs at £30 each at selected properties only, so ask first.
- A refundable security deposit of £75 to £200 is taken, depending on the property and the length of stay.
- The balance is due six weeks before you arrive.
- Cancelling 43 days out or more costs a quarter of the rent, rising to the full amount inside 13 days, or £20 if the estate re-lets your dates.
- No smoking anywhere in the accommodation.
- The short term let registration is PK11879F and the EPC rating is F.

Where it puts you
Crieff is a few miles down the road for the shops and the restaurants, and it holds its Highland Games in August. The estate sends guests to The Glenturret, which it puts at just over two miles away, and to fishing on the Tay and the Earn. Frequently asked questions
Can we get inside Monzie Castle?
Yes. Holiday guests get a complimentary tour, April to October and over Christmas and New Year, subject to availability. Public tours run for a few weeks in early summer and are booked ahead.
Can we bring a dog?
Not to this one. The estate allows dogs at selected properties at £30 per pet, and marks Brae Cottage and Mill House as the pet friendly ones. Dogs must be flea treated and are not left unsupervised in bedrooms.
Are the bedrooms upstairs?
Yes, and there are two staircases up to them, one a spiral stone stair. It is worth a word with the estate first if stairs are a problem.
Does the estate let anywhere else?
Yes. Four other self catering properties, from Brae Cottage for two up to Mill House for ten, plus bed and breakfast rooms at Mill House.
Where can we eat nearby?
The estate keeps its own list. In Crieff it names The Glenturret Restaurant, G's Bistro, Craobh, The Quaich and The Tower, with The Coorie Inn at Muthill further out.
