One room, a stream, and nine acres of garden
The Old Workshop is what the name says. Eastwood's working building, high on the bank of the stream that runs down through the garden grounds, has been opened out into a single room for two. Oak floors and painted timber panelling run through it, a lounge area sits at one end and a well equipped kitchen at the other, and large bi-fold doors fold back onto decked seating that faces the garden with the Tay beyond.
The bed is a superking, or twins if you ask when you book, which a studio rarely offers. Heating is electric and underfloor, so the wood burning stove is there for the evenings rather than for getting through the day. The kitchen runs to a combi microwave oven and a fridge with a freezer compartment rather than a full cooker, and there is a Nespresso machine. The dining table seats four, two more than the studio sleeps.
The grounds are the other half of what you are booking. Eastwood was once part of the Atholl Estates and still holds nine acres of riverside garden and woodland looking across to Birnam Wood and Birnam Hill, and studio guests have the run of it. Trout fishing comes by arrangement, in Eastwood's own named pools on the Tay.
Good to know
- It is one room. The bed, the kitchen, and the lounge area share it, and only the shower room is separate.
- The kitchen has a combi microwave oven rather than a conventional cooker, so plan the meals around that.
- Eastwood publishes no check in or check out times and no pet policy on its own pages. Coolstays, which also lists the studio, calls it dog friendly and gives a three night minimum stay.
- The Dunkeld and Birnam Tourist Association listing gives off road parking for one car, and Coolstays puts the space about 50 metres from the door rather than beside it.
- Nightly rates are not published on Eastwood's own site, so enquire through the Workshop page.

Location
Where it puts you
Dunkeld is half a mile west and Eastwood counts it as walking distance, which puts the shops, the cafés, and the riverside pubs within reach without moving the car. Birnam Wood and Birnam Hill fill the view from the far bank.
Upriver is where the white water is, and Nae Limits runs rafting and canyoning from Ballinluig, further up the A9. South on the same road is Perth, close enough for a day out of the garden, and our two day guide to Perth covers what to do with one. Eastwood puts Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness inside ninety minutes on the A9 as well.
Perth and Perthshire
The city on the Tay and the county around it, south down the A9 from Dunkeld.
Nae Limits
White water rafting and canyoning on the Tay and the Tummel, run from Ballinluig.
Frequently asked questions
What can you cook on?
The kitchen is well equipped and runs to a combi microwave oven and a fridge with a freezer compartment. There is a Nespresso machine, and the decking outside is set up for outdoor dining.
How many does the dining table seat?
Four, in a studio that sleeps two.
Can you get here by train?
Yes. Dunkeld and Birnam station is on the Highland Main Line with direct trains from around Scotland, and the Caledonian Sleeper between Inverness and London stops every evening. Eastwood arranges pick ups and drop offs for anyone arriving and leaving by train.
How do you find the entrance?
Leave the A9 at the Coupar Angus and Blairgowrie exit, bear left to cross the Telford Bridge over the Tay, then turn right onto the A984 along the north side of the river. The entrance is about 500 metres along on the right.
Is there fishing?
Eastwood has trout fishing by arrangement in its own named pools on the River Tay.
Can The Old Workshop be hired for anything other than a holiday?
Yes. Eastwood offers it as a retreat space, furnished, part furnished, or empty, and asks you to enquire direct for that.
