A cabin built to sink into the field
Agritourism is the estate's own word for it, a plain way of saying the cabin sits on a working farm rather than in a landscaped garden. The cladding is local larch, the roof is a living one, and the triple glazing runs round all four sides, so the views are 360 degrees and the building is meant to disappear into the ground it stands on.
Inside, everything is on one floor: a bedroom, a bathroom, and the living space with the wood burning stove in it. The slate floor is warmed from underneath by air source heating, so the stove is the extra rather than the only heat in the place. The lining is plywood, which the estate describes as a work of art.
The stated occupancy is two. A pull-out sofa bed, a travel cot and a high chair are all on the facilities list, so a couple with a baby is provided for, but the estate's own index of its cottages calls this one a romantic, rustic cabin for two.

- The estate publishes no rates, arrival and departure times or minimum stay. Booking runs through its own system, or the cabin's phone and email.
- The facilities list does not itemise the kitchen, so ask what the cooking equipment is if you intend to cook properly.

- The farm shop and tearoom is 1.7 miles away, which the estate calls a five minute drive or a thirty minute walk. It opens 9am to 5pm daily.

Finzean is the quiet side of Royal Deeside, off the main road along the river and back into the farmland and forestry behind it. The estate publishes a map of its own tracks through the woods and up onto the hill, and Tom's Cairn is the one it names, for the views out over the Dee and Feugh valleys.
Banchory, Aboyne and Ballater are strung along the Dee to the east and west, with the castles and distilleries that go with them. The other direction, the river runs down to Aberdeen and the coast, where Dunnottar Castle sits on its headland south of Stonehaven.

Frequently asked questions
Are dogs allowed?
The cabin's own page does not give a dog policy, while the estate lists Deer Park Cottage and The Kennels as dog friendly. Ask the estate before you book on the assumption that a dog can come.
How far is the farm shop and tearoom?
The estate puts it at 1.7 miles from the cabin, a five minute drive or a thirty minute walk. It is open 9am to 5pm seven days a week, and there is a Post Office counter on Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings.
Can we fish while we are staying?
The estate lets the Commonty Beat, about 1.25 miles on the south side of the Dee with fifteen salmon pools. It fishes three rods from 1 February to 30 June and two from July. Gear is not provided, and it books through FishPal or the estate office.
What else does the estate let?
Deer Park Cottage, which sleeps six, and The Kennels, which sleeps four. Both are listed as dog friendly and both have use of the estate tennis court.
What walking is there from the door?
The estate has tracks through its woodland and out onto the hill, and publishes a map of them. Tom's Cairn is the walk it names.
