A rainy day adventure at the Skye Serpentarium
Let’s be honest — no trip to the Isle of Skye is complete without a bit of rain. But when the weather closes in and outdoor adventures are off the cards, there’s a hidden gem near Broadford that’s perfect for families — The Skye Serpentarium.
This small but fascinating reptile exhibition and rescue centre offers something a little different from Skye’s usual landscapes and castles. It’s home to a collection of snakes, lizards, tortoises and frogs — many of them rescued — making it a brilliant stop for curious kids (and adults) who aren’t afraid of things that slither and crawl.
Fun and educational for all ages
The Skye Serpentarium is ideal for families with children who love animals or enjoy learning about the weird and wonderful creatures of the world. It’s not a huge place, but there’s plenty to see — from colourful geckos and pythons to giant African snails.
What really makes the visit special is the chance for hands-on experiences. At certain times, visitors can handle some of the reptiles under supervision — a highlight for many kids (and surprisingly popular with parents too). The team here are passionate about conservation and happy to answer questions, making it as educational as it is entertaining.
Parking and facilities
The Serpentarium is located in Broadford, so it’s easy to get to whether you’re staying nearby or passing through on your way around the island. There’s free parking available right outside, and because it’s indoors, it’s a great option when the weather isn’t playing nice.
There’s a small gift shop on-site with reptile-themed souvenirs and snacks, but if you’re after a proper meal or coffee, Broadford has several cafés, restaurants, and shops just a few minutes away.
Opening times & costs
The Serpentarium is usually open from April to October, but it’s always worth checking ahead, especially outside peak season.
Entry prices are:
Adults: £6
Children: £4
Family ticket: around £18 (2 adults + 2 children)
It’s a reasonably priced outing, especially for families looking to fill an hour or two indoors.
How long do you need?
Most visits last between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how interested your group is in reading the displays and engaging with the staff. If you catch one of the handling sessions, you might find yourself staying a bit longer.

Whether it’s your first time seeing a snake up close or you’ve got a budding reptile enthusiast in the family, this little attraction is well worth a visit — and who knows, you might leave with a new appreciation for creatures that don’t have fur or feathers!
