Airdit - Bracken Treehouse

A bath on a deck in thirty acres of wood

Bracken is built out over a south-facing cliff in Airdit Woods, a private thirty acre wood in the low hills north west of St Andrews, and it is a single room done well rather than a house in miniature. A king bed sits under a generous skylight, which is the detail people book it for: cloud in the afternoon, stars at night, and no curtains to bother with.

The rest is more practical than a treehouse usually is. A fully fitted kitchen you can actually cook in, a rainfall shower looking into the canopy, a flushing toilet, and a wood burner for the evenings, which in Fife means most of them outside July.

The outdoor bath on the deck is the other reason it books. It is in the trees, facing south, and it is the thing every guest photograph is of.

It is adults only, which suits what it is: one room, one deck, one bath, and thirty acres of quiet around it.

St Andrews is fifteen minutes east: the Old Course and the Links Trust courses, the West Sands, the cathedral and castle ruins, and enough restaurants for a week of dinners. The Eden Estuary between here and the town is a national nature reserve and one of the best places in Fife for waders and winter geese.

Dundee is twenty-five minutes north over the Tay for the V&A and the waterfront, and the East Neuk villages, Crail, Anstruther and Elie, are half an hour or so south down the coast.
