Off the Track

One lodge under a railway bridge

Off the Track is a single lodge rather than a site, built where the East Neuk railway ran and tucked under the sandstone bridge that carried the line. The paths that connect to the Fife Coastal Path pass the door, and the owners call it their first lodge, so nothing else stands beside it.

Inside is one bespoke suite for two. The bed is a king size with Egyptian cotton linen and blackout blinds, and the shower room off it has a rainfall shower and toiletries from Highland Soap Co. The kitchen is fully fitted, with Smeg appliances, an oven, a hob, a fridge and a kettle, and salt, pepper and oil are in the cupboard when you arrive. A wood burning stove heats the living space.

The hot tub sits on a private deck and is heated by fire rather than by a switch, with the wood supplied on each day of the stay. Direct bookings also bring a welcome pack of Barnett's bread, Scottish jam, local eggs, tea, coffee, sugar and milk.

Crail is two miles away, and the paths at the door join the Fife Coastal Path, which runs the shore through Cellardyke and Anstruther. The owners put Kingsbarns beach and Kingsbarns Golf Links on their doorstep, along with the Scottish Countryman. Donkeys, cows and sheep are just up the track and guests can visit them, though nobody should feed them.
