The oldest inn on Arran, and still a working bar
Lagg is the Gaelic for the hollow, and that is what the building sits in: a wooded dip on the south coast, with its own gardens around it and the river below the windows. It went up in 1791 as a coaching inn, and took its present shape when the Crook family extended the rear in the 1950s and 1960s to add the kitchen, the dining room, and most of the bedrooms. Jules and Lee took it on in 2023.
What separates it from a country hotel is the public bar, which is still the village one. There is a pool table and a dartboard, homemade pizza comes out of the kitchen, and a Sunday pool tournament runs that anyone can enter for a cash prize. Dogs are welcome in there. The lounge bar next door is quieter, open daily from noon until 11pm, and it is where lunch and dinner are served.

Where it puts you
This is the quiet end of Arran. Torrylinn beach is a short walk from the door along a wooded path that passes an ancient burial site, and the hotel puts the walk down Lovers Lane at ten minutes. The south coast paths and the hill routes further north are in the walking on the Isle of Arran guide.
Lagg Distillery is less than a mile away, and Shiskine Golf Course at Blackwaterfoot plays 12 holes as a seaside links, founded in 1896. The ferry lands at Brodick, on the far side of the island, and the hotel does not publish a driving time.

When is food served?
Breakfast runs from 7.30am to 9am in the garden view dining room. After that food is served in the lounge bar every day from noon until 8pm, homemade soup and pizzas included.
Do I need to book dinner?
Yes, for anything from 5.30pm. Residents are asked to book before noon on the day, on 01770 870255, because a table cannot otherwise be guaranteed.
Are dogs allowed?
The hotel calls itself a dog friendly establishment and the public bar says the same. No charge or limit is published, so raise it when you book.
Which rooms have a proper bath?
Most of them. The family room has a bath with a separate shower, and the four poster, the garden double or twin, and the single each have a bath with an overhead shower. The garden suites and Room 8 have walk in showers.
What is in the room?
A television and a complimentary tea tray, with Arran Aromatics toiletries. The four poster and the garden suites also have a seating area, and the suites open onto a terrace with a table and chairs.
